Frankie and I went to our first prenatal class tonight and it was totally awesome. It was a free class on Labor Pain Management held at the hospital. I was completely nervous for some reason. Frank made one little comment about it being a bit early ("
McNugget is only half cooked!") and I kind of hit the roof. "We could bail if he wanted to, we didn't need to go, if he thought it was too early we could wait" blah blah blah--I went on and on. Frank did the best he could not to openly laugh at me. He finally put me at ease saying that he was going to go even if I wasn't going to.
I had nothing to worry about. The class was a basic lecture on the history of obstetric anesthesia and such--all good info--but the best part was the doctor who held the class looked and talked exactly like Dr.
Huxtable on the Cosby Show. He was an elderly black man with cute greying hair who started off the class by telling us that after you help deliver over 18,000+ babies and get too old to go on call anymore, that they award you by putting you in a classroom and just letting you talk. He was great. The class was full of great information about the process of childbirth and how/why they administer painkillers. All good info and delivered in a calm, funny and very inviting way. I raised my hand at the end of class to ask about the accuracy of epidurals, since in 1976 when my mother had me, she said hers didn't take. He almost looked offended, "That didn't happen at OUR hospital, did it!?" and then proceeded to calm me with all sorts of useful information. I really dig information--it makes me worry less. I just need to know what to expect, even if it's the unexpected. You know what I mean?

After a nice dinner near the hospital on the West Side, Frankie and I came home all happy and talky. Usually, I curl up in front of the TV and he holes up in his room in front of his computer, but tonight I followed him into the room and set up shop. That's when the fun began. He's doing boy chores--cleaning up our
iTunes and making sure that all our good records are uploaded and at the higher bit rate (320
kbps). And I had just read in my pregnancy book that this week
McNugget's senses are almost formed and s/he should be able to hear things. Well, out came Frank's sound-geek, high-quality headphones and
McNuggs's first music lesson commenced. Below, find his first musical selections. S/he really kicked at The Beatles and when we played him old-
timey blue grass music by his (possibly) future namesake Asa Martin, Frank's
grandfather's cousin who was a talent scout/musician at the Grand Old
Opry.
