Is there an alien in there?

I was talking to my friend Ann on the phone yesterday when she said I should be able to see McNugget move by now. I'm definitely feeling the little bugger flip, roll and punch, but I hadn't thought to look at my stomach to see if anything made itself known. So when McNugget's after-breakfast calisthenics started up this morning, I thought I would look out for her. I was actually giggling instead of freaking out when I saw the top of my tummy bump up a couple of times. I am still in awe and a little disbelief that there's something living (and moving around) inside me.

A lot of people (guys mostly) keep asking me it's like hosting an Alien. I can see how they would think that. We've been conditioned to think that living organisms that invade our persons (bacteria? parasites? nasty alien life forms with huge fangs and acidic, green blood?) are not the best for us.

But Mother Nature is pretty smart. For the first 4 months of pregnancy, the only physical indication you get that there is indeed a baby growing inside you are some very fuzzy pictures and the joy of round ligament pain, swelling in random parts of your body and gaining weight everywhere it seems except your belly. And you begin to worry...a lot. Am I gaining too much weight? Is she doing ok in there? Did I eat something I shouldn't have? Why can't I feel anything yet? Even though those symptoms sound pretty crappy, feeling them actually put me at ease because they meant that pre-fetus McNugget was growing the way she should be. After four months of feeling nothing specific that indicated that, yes, there is a baby in there, when you do feel her there's nothing alien about it at all.

When I first felt those first "popcorn" like feelings, I calmed down a lot. And now seeing those movements from the outside chills me out even more. McNugget is getting closer to me and soon I'll be able to protect her and make sure that everything is ok. At least, that's what I keep telling myself.

Who knows? Maybe my little alien will really turn out to be my little monster.

McNugget's Second Set of Ultrasound Pictures

Here are McNugget's latest round of ultrasound pictures. S/he was very well behaved today and held still for the ultrasound tech to get some great profile shots (all of the tech's previous babies this morning were NOT as cooperative as our McNugget!). I think my favorite shot thus far is of his/her little feet! You can even make out the little toes!

We chose to not find out about the sex of the baby. Our tech was super cool and teased us that SHE knew the sex and wasn't telling, so she didn't want any phone calls or emails. In addition to the print outs, they gave us a disc with the images (times have changed, huh?). All of McNugget's tests have come out negative thus far and I got a clean bill of health too (blood pressure, weight all good) meaning today was a good day!

Frankie was blown away by the pictures and the news. He was pretty much catatonic after the ultrasound and could barely put into words how he felt. I've been trying to get him to write something for the blog (and for posterity) and maybe one of these days we'll see something from him up here. You know Frank, it takes him weeks to put anything to paper, but once he does it's usually worth the wait. But take my word for it, his face said it all...wow!

First Lessons and First Sounds

Frankie and I went to our first prenatal class tonight and it was totally awesome. It was a free class on Labor Pain Management held at the hospital. I was completely nervous for some reason. Frank made one little comment about it being a bit early ("McNugget is only half cooked!") and I kind of hit the roof. "We could bail if he wanted to, we didn't need to go, if he thought it was too early we could wait" blah blah blah--I went on and on. Frank did the best he could not to openly laugh at me. He finally put me at ease saying that he was going to go even if I wasn't going to.

I had nothing to worry about. The class was a basic lecture on the history of obstetric anesthesia and such--all good info--but the best part was the doctor who held the class looked and talked exactly like Dr. Huxtable on the Cosby Show. He was an elderly black man with cute greying hair who started off the class by telling us that after you help deliver over 18,000+ babies and get too old to go on call anymore, that they award you by putting you in a classroom and just letting you talk. He was great. The class was full of great information about the process of childbirth and how/why they administer painkillers. All good info and delivered in a calm, funny and very inviting way. I raised my hand at the end of class to ask about the accuracy of epidurals, since in 1976 when my mother had me, she said hers didn't take. He almost looked offended, "That didn't happen at OUR hospital, did it!?" and then proceeded to calm me with all sorts of useful information. I really dig information--it makes me worry less. I just need to know what to expect, even if it's the unexpected. You know what I mean?

After a nice dinner near the hospital on the West Side, Frankie and I came home all happy and talky. Usually, I curl up in front of the TV and he holes up in his room in front of his computer, but tonight I followed him into the room and set up shop. That's when the fun began. He's doing boy chores--cleaning up our iTunes and making sure that all our good records are uploaded and at the higher bit rate (320 kbps). And I had just read in my pregnancy book that this week McNugget's senses are almost formed and s/he should be able to hear things. Well, out came Frank's sound-geek, high-quality headphones and McNuggs's first music lesson commenced. Below, find his first musical selections. S/he really kicked at The Beatles and when we played him old-timey blue grass music by his (possibly) future namesake Asa Martin, Frank's grandfather's cousin who was a talent scout/musician at the Grand Old Opry.

1) "Your Love" - The Outfield
2) "You Really Got A Hold On Me" - Smokey Robinson and the Miracles
3) "My Love Is Bigger Than Your Love" - McClusky
4) "Waiting For Superman" - The Flaming Lips*
5) "Ana Ng" - They Might Be Giants
6) "Don't Worry Baby" - The Beach Boys
7) "Flying Robert" - The Tiger Lilies
8) "Please Love Me" - B.B. King
9) "Let It Be Me" - The Beatles
10) "Heroes" - David Bowie
11) "Dr. Ginger Blue" - Asa Martin
12) "Lonesome, Broke and Weary" - Asa Martin
13) "Good Vibrations" - The Beach Boys

*Frank hopes that McNuggs is inspired by Steven Drozd's inspirational drumming style and not his heroine abuse.

Want to Snoogle with me?

Frank rules. Period. End of sentence.

I have been having a hard time getting comfortable at night. I toss, I turn, I fret, I ache. Being pregnant isn't the most comfortable of experiences.

I've been using a body pillow for years now, an old, battered body pillow that Frank affectionately calls "The Stranger" since it lies between us and takes up most of his side of the bed. It does help me keep aligned and supported, something I've really needed for the past month or so, but it's so old at this point the stuffing is practically flat and the custom pillow case is looking completely worn and tattered. To compensate I've started to steal even more of my allotted usage of comforter to stuff under my ever-expanding belly that now leaves Frank with even less mattress space and no covers.

The remedy?: The Snoogle. It's a super cushy, leach-shaped body pillow that I can curl my legs, arms and belly around. Frank heard about it from a co-worker who said it saved his marriage and since I've been having such a hard time sleeping, he got one for me as a mid-week pregnancy surprise (awwwwwww). It's maiden voyage last night proved to be a major success and even left Frank with more mattress and comforter than he's had in years. You can use it as your main pillow, as well as a body pillow. Flipping around it throughout the night proved to be no problem at all. I even had to bust out a heating pad for a couple of minutes and the Snoogle gave me perfect support. Love it! This may be the best pregnancy thing I've gotten so far--and it's all thanks to Frank!
